Mark Sampson

In 1999, Mark Sampson and his wife Sam Pearce, an Oxford graduate with wide PR experience, founded the Cape Comedy Collective, SA first cross-cultural comedy initiative. Sampson mentored Loyiso Gola, Riaad Moosa, Nik Rabinowitz, Kurt Schoonraad, Kagiso Lediga, Stuart Taylor, Tracy Klass, Mel Jones, Khaya Dlanga, Jason Cope and many more in their weekly Comedy Lab.

In 2003, they took a CCC show to the International Edinburgh Fringe Festival, in partnership with Old Mutual, the Department of Arts and Culture and the British Council. They achieved 4 star reviews and a dynamic revision of what it means to be Proudly South African for an international audience.

Since then Sampson has written and toured 3 solo shows nationwide – "Missing Links" comedy about evolution reflecting on diversity; "Feels Funny" comedy about depression reflecting on growth through adversity in SA; "Africa Clockwise" eco-comedy reflecting on the power of African values.

Mark Sampson is an hilarious comedian and a powerful communicator: a ‘comediator’, who brings a lightness of touch to difficult issues, empowering his audiences by diffusing their fear of challenges with digestible facts leavened with fun. His appeal is broader than your average taciturn adventurer – resident in South Africa since 1992, and fluent in Mzansi culture, his British-born humour also ensures an international reach. He can and does talk to anyone, and gets a grin from everyone.

Mark Sampson launched the City of Cape Town's Climate Smart Campaign in 2011 and his Africa Clockwise presentation was the hit of the Sustain Our Africa Summit, the continent’s largest environmental conference, in October 2012. This ECO-medy has inspired dozens of SA's top companies and is as hilarious as you'd expect from "SA's funniest stand up comedian by some distance" (The Star).

Every successful South African knows about crippling middle class suburban guilt, formerly known as White Guilt. Following COP17 we are overwhelmed by another incapacitating emotion: Green Guilt. Africa Clockwise gives practical advice about how to cope with the challenges of global warming using intelligent, interactive comedy.

Sometimes it's hard to engage with the issues of sustainability but Africa Clockwise shows us the way, through laughter. This entertaining and empowering 35 minute stand-up show demonstrates how life in a developing country such as South Africa makes us both resilient and adaptable, and provides us with the tools to cope with radical change – climate or otherwise.

What our clients say ...

"It’s stand-up comedy at its finest,
a man with something to say and a fabulous way of saying it."
Daily Maverick

"Mark Sampson puts the conscience into comedy,
Africa Clockwise is more than a show, it’s a crusade. Sampson’s style segues between serious and very, very funny."
Business Day

"Mark Sampson was a huge success at the
Nedbank CA Training Programme 2012 Winter Seminar. He brings the responsible messages across in a funny and interactive way. He has so much knowledge and shared a great deal. I really believe he encouraged the students to change their lifestyles, as well as become responsible citizens and start making a difference now."
