Paddy Upton

Paddy Upton is an Executive Coach and Sport Scientist who partnered Gary Kirsten in leading the Indian National cricket team in 2010 to the No 1 ranked test team in the world for their first time ever, and to win the 2011 ICC World Cup. Following this, they joined the South African (Proteas) team, and within 15 months, coached them become the first team to ever be ranked No 1 in the world in all three formats of the game.

Paddy has two Masters Degrees, in Sport Science and in Executive Coaching. The former led him to work with the SA Cricket Team as fitness trainer (1994-1998), under Bob Woolmer and Hansie Cronje, and then with W.P. Rugby.

Changing careers, he moved to work as an Executive/ Business Coach, eventually coaching in leading business organisations across various industries. He balanced coaching in business and with coaching in sport, where he was Performance coach to athletes such as Gary Kirsten Graeme Smith, Jacques Kallis, Natalie du Toit as well as with various Professional cricket teams and Olympic athletes.

In March 2008 he joined Gary Kirsten to work with the Indian National Cricket Team in the role of Mental Conditioning and Strategic Leadership Coach. At the time, Gary had never coached a team and Paddy’s role did not exist in world cricket. Both novices in their respective positions, their goal was to help India to become the No 1 Test team in the world, win the 2011 ICC World Cup, and to maintain a happy team environment while working towards these goals.

In 2010 the Indian team became the No 1 ranked test team in the world, and went on to be crowned ICC World Cup champions in April 2011. Sachin Tendulkar described the team as, “the happiest team I have ever played in.”

Since October 2011, Paddy has worked as the Performance Director of the Proteas Cricket Team, again working in partnership with Gary Kirsten. Their goal for the Proteas was to become the best cricket team in the world. In August 2012, the Proteas became the first team ever to be ranked world No 1 in all three formats of the game.

Paddy works to balance career, family, great health and his hobbies, which include surfing, trail running, fishing and exploring remote corners of the world.
